The First Jewish Co-Educational Camp in Canada
The First Jewish Co-Educational Camp in Canada
Camp Winnebagoe was the first Jewish co-educational camp established in Canada founded by the Danson family in 1933. It has always been seeped in rich traditions particularly mindful of its Jewish heritage.
Before each meal, a blessing is sung in both Hebrew and English. The food is served Kosher style, no milk products served with meat, no pork products or shellfish.
On Friday nights, the entire camp population dresses in white and gathers for a short service where blessing over candles, challah and grape juice (simulating wine) are recited. The dinner itself is traditional Sabbath fare: challah, matzoh ball soup, chicken and vegetables followed by a special dessert. After dinner, campers and staff proceed to Chapel Point – our outdoor place of worship where a service hosted by a different unit of campers takes place. To honour the Sabbath, the evening program on Friday nights is less active and quieter than those offered on all other nights.
For those campers whose Bar/Bat Mitzvahs are upcoming, practice time is set aside within the daily schedule. A staff member is assigned to support and review the camper’s portion.
